Crash closes multi-storey for second time in month

A multi-storey car park will "remain closed until further notice" after a crash damaged an entry support post and left two people needing hospital treatment.

Lurke Street Car Park in Bedford has been shut indefinitely by the borough council following the incident on Saturday.

It is the second time in a month that the authority has had to close the site, after a vehicle hit a pillar in early April.

The authority said it would remain shut until the "necessary repairs" could be carried out.

One woman who was at the car park at the time of the crash said she "heard a bang" before seeing "a few people helping" a man.

"Hopefully it is not closed for too long, as people need to use that car park," she added.

After the crash, emergency services including police were sent to the scene.

A spokesperson for the East of England Ambulance Service said: "An ambulance was sent to the scene and transported two patients to Bedford Hospital South Wing for further assessment and treatment."

It is currently unknown whether or not any cars were left parked inside the car park at the time of its closure.

Bedfordshire Police has been contacted for comment.
